Happy Watchnight!

Revelations  by Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

Tonight many African Americans will gather in churches for a traditional Watchnight service.  The custom commemorates how African Americans gathered in churches on the New Year’s eve before the enactment of the Emancipation Proclamation (January 1, 1863).  The “Wade in the Water” section of acclaimed choreographer Alvin Ailey’s classic work Revelations uses a spiritual associated with the Underground Railroad pays tribute to people who escaped, resisted and endured the national tragedy of slavery.  This Watchnight, let’s remember organizing works.  Here’s to an emancipating New Year.

There are two undeniably amazing things about Best Man Holiday. First, its one of 2.5 competently made feature films starring a predominantly Black cast (I can’t attest to the competency of any Tyler Perry film but it was made, so…). Second, its soundtrack is too dope for its own good. Its a great film to remind us all of how much fantastic pop music has been made in the spirit of the holiday season. In that same spirit we here at Progressive Pupil want to offer up some of our favorite songs to be the soundtrack to your Christmas.

Big Freedia (pronounced “FREE-da”) represents New Orleans in many ways.  New Orleans’ history is a mix of many cultures and ethnicities, where Africans (both free and slaves), Native Americans, French and other European natives – all intermingled in one. This diversity has been expressed through the years with a wide variety of foods, art, and architecture and of course music that has the city with amazing vibes and a wonderful atmosphere. It’s like a 24 hour party just inviting you to take it all in. Big Freedia is kind of the same.

The Missing Pieces of the Mass Incarceration Narrative

We’re all aware of the well-documented and much-analyzed disproportionately high incarceration rate of minorities. Researchers and pundits have asserted that these high incarceration rates are due to a variety of causes including lack of education, low incomes, and lack of fathers in the household. While these factors, of course, tend to influence the likelihood of criminality, I think there are two key pieces of the narrative that have been ignored.
