Women’s Land Rights in South Africa

For indigenous communities around the world, securing land rights is a critical issue. In South Africa, many women are denied access to land. As the post-apartheid government struggles to resolve entrenched social and economic inequalities, women throughout South Africa are fighting to make their voices heard.

This is an interesting video. I cannot imagine how hard it must be for women to lose the land they lived on just because of the death of a spouse. It is such a clear example of women being forced to depend on their male counterparts to meet their basic needs. It’s heartening to hear that these groups are working not only for legal reform but to shift the culture in the region because as history as shown these two things must shift together in order for true change to take place.
